Having spent ten years as Professor of Psychological Medicine (Clinical Behavioural Sciences) at Kumamoto University, Dr. Toshi Kitamura has now opened a private mental health clinic in the heart of his home town of Tokyo. Kitamura KOKORO Clinic Mental Health accepts clients on an appointment only basis, after an initial brief telephone consultation with Dr. Kitamura (telephone 03-5738-8370). Hour-long consultations will then take place every week in a cosy home-like atmosphere, and a support nurse will contact you between sessions to answer your queries.
Dr. Kitamura was and remains the first and only Japanese psychiatrist to hold British qualifications. He is internationally renowned as a researcher as well as a clinician in perinatal psychiatry (e.g., depression and anxiety during pregnancy, after childbirth, and related to parenting), depression and mood disorders in general, and stress management and personality. He introduced to Japan the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), a personality measure now used worldwide. He has long been using the TCI in his clinical practice. He is also known as a specialist in ethics in the fields of psychiatry as well as law and mental health.
Dr. Kitamura focuses on understanding personality from the context of life history, and takes an approach characterised by an active listening style that promotes client self-determination, in turn empowering the client’s capacity to recover from distress. Evidence-based medication is prescribed at the minimum necessary dose after careful discussion with the client.
Dr. Kitamura is on the editorial boards of many international journals and was recently appointed as Distinguished Visiting Professor, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (U.S.).
